Maintenance is important for the longevity of your hardwood floors just as it is for anything you hope to use for years. Flooring is often neglected and abused more than any other purchased item and the fact we walk all over it doesn't help. Here are some helpful tips you can use to ensure your hardwood floor maintains its beauty and for as long as you need it to.

  • The most moisture in your home will come from your basement. Purchase a humidistat in order to track the levels of humidity in your home and place it in the basement for the most accurate calculation.
  • Purchase a dehumidifier to put in the basement as well. This will remove the moisture from your home, which is beneficial since hardwood that absorbs too much moisture can cup and cracks.
  • Keep the humidity in your home between 30-50%.
  •  In order to maintain the integrity and appearance of your hardwood, apply felt pads to the bottom of all furniture that is in direct contact with the flooring.
  • If you have pets, ensure that their nails are kept short in order to avoid any surface scratches.
  • When cleaning your floor, choose a cleaner that is specifically for hardwood flooring in order to avoid damages to the wood. A cleaner such as Bona is the ideal product for this. Use a dust mop for everyday cleaning.
  • Do not let excessive water get on the floor because this can deteriorate the wood and the finish.
